Agriculture Area Plan
The recently adopted Sustainable Kamloops Plan identified the need for the City of Kamloops to gain a better understanding on where viable agricultural land exists, how it should be used or enhanced, and what opportunities are available for increased food production and processing. To answer these questions a decision was made to develop an Agriculture Area Plan for the City of Kamloops.
Agriculture is historically significant in the City of Kamloops, shaping both its development pattern and its economy. The primary purpose of developing an Agriculture Area Plan is to establish updated and more defined policies that will protect and promote agriculture and encourage sustainable agricultural practices. The plan will focus on our community's farm areas to identify opportunities and practical solutions so we can strengthen agriculture and ultimately contribute to our community's long-term sustainability.
Public Participation
Future opportunities for Public Participation on the Agriculture Area Plan will be identified here.
Agriculture Advisory Committee
An advisory committee has been formed to assist with the development of an Agricultural Area Plan. The purpose of the committee is to oversee the project and provide recommendations to Council. The Committee will also be responsible for selecting the consultant (if applicable). At the request of Council, the Committee may also provide advice to Council and staff regarding agricultural issues and land use matters affecting agriculture.
The composition of the Agricultural Advisory Committee is as follows:
- One representative from Council;
- One representative from BC Livestock Producers or BC Cattleman Association;
- Two representatives from local ranching/farming operations;
- One representative from the Farmers Market Association;
- One representative from Certified Organic Association of BC;
- Two representatives from the public who have an interest in agriculture;
- One representative from Ministry of Agriculture or the Agricultural Land Commission (non-voting);
- City staff and consultant (non-voting).
