Firefighter Training

Training

Kamloops Fire Rescue career members train daily to the British Columbia Firefighter Standards as laid out by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

The training program is administered by the Chief Training Officer and an Assistant Training Officer with the assistance of the four Battalion Chiefs, Station Officers and Lieutenants. All members are required to successfully complete series of written and practical exams to become provincially certified as a firefighter prior to the start of their fourth year of employment.

Advanced, specialized and officer training is done using in-house instructors with special skills (e.g. First Responder, High Angle Rescue) and through distance education in conjunction with the Justice Institute of B.C. The three auxiliary groups train one evening per week. This training is coordinated by the Training Officer and individuals with training responsibilities for their respective groups.

Training Centre

In 1998, following years of deliberation, a 2 acre training centre was established with the assistance of several corporate partners who committed funds, materials, and/or supplies. The partners include members of local industry, neighboring communities and other City departments who make use of the facility for their own specific training needs.

The Training Centre is a "live fire" facility designed to simulate realistic emergency situations. Fire departments and industry acquire invaluable "hands on" experience when training in a controlled yet safe environment.

The Training Centre is is available to out-of-town fire departments and industry for a nominal fee. Interested parties should contact the Training Officer.
