Recycling Program
Overall the curbside recycling program is going well, but some materials have been recycled that should not be included. They are:

NO FOOD SCRAPS or ORGANIC WASTE should be in the recycling container. Not only are these not collected in the program, they could potentially contaminate an entire load and prevent recycling of the other materials.

NO SCRAP METAL such as used fuel or propane tanks, or automotive parts. Used fuel and propane tanks particularly pose a risk of explosion during handling. Please take them to a local scrap metal dealer. Only metal food cans, aluminum foil and food trays are permitted in the recycling program.

NO PLASTIC BAGS, GARDEN HOSES, or BUBBLE WRAP is accepted in the recycling program.

ONLY plastics labelled with the recycling symbol #1 to 7 are permitted. (Often used as food containers or plastic bottles for household products - shampoo, detergent etc.)

NO STYROFOAM is accepted, even if it has the recycling symbol.

NO CLOTHING. The recycling program is for paper, plastic, metal, and glass products only that get reused in the manufacturing of new products. Used clothing can be donated to thrift stores or used as rags.

Residential Collection Fee Rates
As of July 1, 2006 all garbage containers must comply with our new standards. The City will apply the Collection Fee (and any applicable lease options) on your Utility Bill. Annual costs to residents are outlined in the following table.

Note: Collection Service Charges apply to all residents, whether they lease or own. Lease rates do not apply to residents providing their own City compliant containers.

This is a $50 fee for all container size changes, with the exception of new homeowners.

Curbside Recycling Annual Rate and By-Laws
The annual fee for the recycling containers will be $36.30 (including the 10% discount for pre-deadline payments), and it will appear on your utility statements along with sewer, water and garbage fees. This fee will include the lease of a wheeled container and collection of its recyclable contents. Garbage and recyclables will be collected on a weekly basis.

Residential

Last Call for Garbage
Please have your garbage at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. The time of day your materials will be collected may be changing with the new recycling program. Your collection day will remain the same, but not necessarily the time of day.
Be Bear Aware
From April 1 to November 30 do not put garbage out before 4:00 a.m. For more information on Bear Aware, please visit www.bearaware.bc.ca
Approved Wheeled Containers Only
Residential garbage will be collected from City-issued wheeled containers or approved owned wheeled containers only. Garbage must fit inside the container so that the lid is completely closed.
Christmas Bonus
Your first collection service after Christmas will permit 3 standard garbage bags per household. Standard bags are 66cm x 91cm (26 inches x 36 inches).
Bag It
Wet refuse, dust, sawdust, and cold ashes must be bagged inside your container.
Over the Limit
If you have extra garbage, please place it in a standard garbage bag beside your wheeled container with an orange garbage tag attached. You can buy orange Garbage Tags at City Hall, 7-Eleven Food Stores, Coopers in Westsyde, Oak Hills Grocery, Safeway in Sahali and on Fortune, and the Hasty Market on 8th Street. Please ensure that orange stickers are fastened to and visible on any extra items.
Spare a Thought for the Garbage Collector
Keep weeds, overhanging bushes, and trees trimmed back so that your collector can easily get at your containers. In winter, clear a path free of snow and ice to reduce injuries to your collector. Please maintain a safe access to your containers.
Reminder
Items not conforming to the above requirements will not be collected. Grass clippings, cardboard and newsprint will not be accepted in garbage collection containers. Of course, there are some items that we will not collect - including paint, antifreeze, oil, automotive batteries, propane cylinders, animal waste, and kitty litter. Items not conforming to the above requirements will not be collected.
