Weather Hampers Opening Plans for City Sports Fields

Kamloops, B.C. - The City of Kamloops Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services department is experiencing significant challenges in their efforts to have all outdoor sports fields ready by the traditional opening date of April 15, 2009. The unseasonably cool and wet weather has resulted in delaying necessary field and turf preparation by four weeks.

According to Nick DeCicco, parks operations supervisor "The cool Spring weather has been a real challenge for us to meet our traditional mid-April field opening period. However, we are working hard to achieve our April 15 opening date and we appreciate the public's support by staying off all City fields until they are ready for opening. As we work towards our planned opening date, City staff will update the public and all user groups on the opening status based on how well our field preparations are proceeding," explains DeCicco.

The cool weather will impact the $1.4 million McArthur Island Sports Field Expansion construction schedule as City staff had plans to begin the field reconstruction in early March and will now be delayed until March 30 at the earliest. According to DeCicco, "Once we have a good idea of how these unplanned delays will impact the McArthur Island user groups we will issue a more detailed update to the public. The good news is weather has not delayed the McArthur Island boat launch dredging project which will be completed this month."
